It is a memorial built in the memory of Indians who lost their lives in the massacre carried out by General Dyer on 13th April, 1919.This happened on the occasion of Baisakhi, one of the most popular festivals in Punjab. On this day, General Dyer ordered his soldiers to open fire on innocent and unarmed men, women and children inside the garden, without so much as a prior warning.Trapped by the walled enclosures on all sides, hundreds were killed immediately while others jumped inside a well to save their lives. It was one of the most unfortunate episodes in India’s history, and an extreme example of the inhuman and brutal policies pursued by the British Raj.

The similarities also extend to its domes and canopies as well as the bridge which leads to the temple.A particular attraction inside the temple are its silver doors. Major festivals like Janmashtami, Ram Navami and Diwali are celebrated enthusiastically inside the temple.
